7 signs that counselling could help

People often wait a long time before reaching out for support — usually because they’re not sure their difficulties are “bad enough” to warrant it. The truth is there’s no threshold you have to cross. If something is weighing on you, that’s reason enough. Still, it can help to recognise some of the common signs that talking to a counsellor might make a difference.

1. You feel stuck

You keep going over the same worry, the same argument, or the same decision without moving forward. Counselling gives you space to step back and see things more clearly.

2. Your sleep or appetite has changed

Persistent difficulty sleeping, or eating much more or less than usual, is often one of the first ways stress and low mood show up in the body.

3. Small things feel overwhelming

When everyday tasks start to feel like too much, it’s often a sign that you’re carrying more than you can comfortably hold on your own.

4. You’re withdrawing from people

Pulling away from friends, family or activities you used to enjoy can be a quiet sign that something needs attention.

5. You’re relying on something to cope

Leaning more heavily on alcohol, food, work or your phone to get through the day can be a way of managing feelings that might be easier to face with support.

6. A change or loss has knocked you sideways

Bereavement, a relationship breakdown, redundancy or any major life change can take far more out of us than we expect. You don’t have to navigate it alone.

7. You simply want to understand yourself better

You don’t need to be in crisis. Many people come to counselling to make sense of patterns, build confidence, or work towards goals.

What happens next

A first session is simply a conversation — a chance to talk through what’s going on and see whether we’re a good fit, with no obligation to continue. Everything you share is confidential.

If any of this resonates, you’re welcome to get in touch. Taking that first step is often the hardest part — and you don’t have to have it all worked out before you do.
